USAW Statement on IOC's Recommendation to Include Weighting in LA28
COLORADO SPRINGS - On Friday, Oct. 13, following the International Olympic Committee Executive Boards’ recommendation to include weightlifting in the Los Angeles 28 edition of the Games, USA Weightlifting released the following statement:
“We applaud the International Olympic Committee’s decision to include weightlifting on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Program, enabling American athletes to pursue their dream of competing on their home turf on the world’s greatest stage. This momentous ruling affirms the important strides our sport has taken to improve our governance, commitment to clean sport and empowerment of the athlete voice. But our work is not finished. USA Weightlifting will continue to relentlessly advocate for a clean sport that is governed fairly and puts athletes first. Today, we celebrate weightlifting, an original Olympic sport, and its rightful place in the Olympic Games.”
Per the IOC’s official release, the IOC EB recommends weightlifting’s inclusion on the LA28 sports programme following the decision by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to delegate its anti-doping management to the International Testing Agency (ITA) and its sanctioning to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) at least until the end of 2028. The effectiveness of the anti-doping programmes for the Paris 2024 Olympic qualification and Olympic competition will continue to be closely monitored by the IOC, as will the implementation of the governance and cultural changes adopted by the IWF.
The proposal will be final if it is ratified by a vote of the IOC Session taking place in Mumbai, India on Monday, October 16, 2023.
