Board of Directors Approves Updated Bylaws
COLORADO SPRINGS - USA Weightlifting’s Board of Directors has approved updated bylaws that are effective as of Feb. 21, 2024. The amended bylaws are available here.
“The USAW Board of Directors is very pleased to share an update to the organizational bylaws,” said Jenny Schumacher, Chair of the USAW Board of Directors. “We saw the need to streamline our primary governance document. We worked with our legal counsel to ensure that our bylaws are in compliance with U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee standards and non-profit best practices. In the coming months, the Board expects to present further proposed bylaws updates to the membership. We will be soliciting member input during that time. In the meantime, we are proud of our position as a high-performing National Governing Body whose governance practices are an example to others in the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.”
Amendments to the bylaws were made based on a number of factors, including:
- The necessity, after many years of one-off amendments, of a comprehensive review and cleanup to address inconsistencies, internally conflicting language, and structural and grammatical errors
- Policies and procedures written into the bylaws that are better suited to live and function outside of the structure of the bylaws
- Streamline USAW’s Committee structure to ensure compliance with USOPC requirements
Consistent with the prior bylaws, the amendments effective Feb. 21 do not impact member voting rights, as such changes require action by the membership.
USA Weightlifting’s Board of Directors, alongside CEO & President Matt Sicchio, believe these amendments to the bylaws further progress the mission of the organization to support, promote and educate a diverse and inclusive community of weightlifting and the use of the barbell in the United States. These changes ensure our bylaws keep up with the organization’s goals and operational excellence. USAW remains committed to doing what’s best for our membership and community.
